September 21, 2017 – "ACEDS Detroit Chapter Second Annual eDiscovery Fall Symposium 2017: Big Data Matters"
The Detroit Chapter of The Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists (ACEDS) held its Second Annual Fall E-Discovery Symposium at the Westin Book Cadillac in Downtown Detroit on Thursday, September 21st from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The event was sponsored by Catalyst, Epiq, Integreon, PwC, Robert Half Legal, Warner Norcross and Xact Data Discovery. Written materials were provided in kind by Miller Canfield.

This event attracted approximately 80 members of the legal community from Detroit as well as other areas of Michigan and across the country. The Symposium featured opening remarks from the Detroit Chapter President, Scott Petz, Esq.  Magistrate Judge Stafford was the keynote speaker and discussed the impact of Big Data on the modified rules. Judge Stafford highlighted the concept of cooperation and proportionality and how they can and should be used by attorneys practicing in Federal Court. The Cost Shifting and Proportionality panel consisted of eDiscovery veterans Megan McKnight, Esq. and Denise B. Bach, CEDS, who provided practical tips on crafting discovery requests, responding to unduly burdensome requests and how best to apply the proportionality analysis by highlighting ways technology can be utilized to help counsel control costs and scope. Seasoned eDiscovery practitioners, B. Jay Yelton, III, Esq. and Kaylee Walstad, CEDS gave an engaging presentation on ESI Protocol. This presentation covered some of the “dos and don’ts” of crafting effective ESI protocols that are simple and straight forward in order to get full cooperation and participation of all involved. Jay also provided a comprehensive written guide that our attendees could take to use in their everyday eDiscovery practices. The use of analytics and technology assisted review is fairly mainstream in today’s litigation environment. The final session of this event, Alternative Uses for Analytics, encompassed a number of areas where analytics could be applied in both litigation and general business such as M&A Contract analysis, Regulatory Compliance Audits and Predictive Compliance in the Workplace. The panel was comprised of Bennett Borden, Esq., Brett Beeman and Jeff Gilles.

The closing remarks were given by Mary Mack, Executive Director of ACEDS. Mary summed up the half-day educational and networking event as one of her favorites to attend and gave praise to the Detroit Chapter Board for setting the bar as one of the most dedicated and successful ACEDS Chapters.

June 20, 2017 – “Wine and Cheese Social”
This year’s annual social event featured Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget Mary McCormack as our distinguished guest. It was a great opportunity to meet Justice McCormack as well as network with industry colleagues.

The ACEDS Detroit 1st Annual eDiscovery Symposium held on September 22, 2016 was a huge success!

This event was attended by 65 members in our community, and the Symposium featured Retired Judge Michael Hluchaniuk as the keynote speaker, who discussed the reasons for the development of the Eastern District of Michigan to adopt the Model ESI Order and to what extent the Model Order has been successful.  Judge "Mike" also examined the ethical requirements for attorneys to become more familiar with eDiscovery guidelines (including the Model Order), tools and strategies, as well as providing suggestions that attorneys can use to help implement these concepts in other jurisdictions.  The Technology Assisted Review  panel consisted of seasoned eDiscovery practitioners Scott Petz, Thomas Isaacs, and Jay Yelton, who explored the practical uses of TAR in litigation, and provided an overview of recent case law discussing the use of such technology in federal and state courts around the nation.  Information Governance is one of the hottest topics in the legal world today yet is also one of the least understood. In this timely and informative session led by Doug Kaminski,, we learned what IG is and how it applies to the work of you and your team…and what can happen if you don't focus on this important subject.  The Cybersecurity/Data Breach session discussed why the abundance of technological tools available to today’s legal professional may simplify certain tasks and add efficiencies, yet these benefits come with increasingly complex security challenges.  Where massive amounts of data can be transmitted, manipulated, filtered and stored on a “faster, cheaper” basis, it is not always “better”.  Mary Mack and Claudia Rast also discussed that today’s legal professional not only has the responsibilities of his/her legal practice, but also must be acutely aware of those cyber threats that can steal, corrupt, delete, encrypt, or otherwise sabotage confidential client information.

Thank you to our Elite Sponsors of this event:  Computing Source, DTI, Integreon, Inventus, and Warner Norcross & Judd.
