HIGHLIGHTS FROM LEGALTECH NEW YORK 2017
Last week, ACEDS joined more than 10,000 legal technology professionals, 150 exhibitors and listened to numerous educational presentations at Legaltech in New York City from January 31 - February 2, 2017. From the kickoff event on Monday evening with Jared Coseglia to our Snapchat Spectacle video we are excited to share a few the highlights from #Legalweek17.

Jared Coseglia and the State of the Industry: eDiscovery and Cybersecurity
Legaltech was kicked into high gear when ACEDS hosted TRU Staffing Partners founder and CEO Jared Coseglia’s TED-like talk on the State of the Industry: eDiscovery and Cybersecurity on Monday, January 30, 2017. ACEDS Executive Director Mary Mack also shared insights from the Hanover Research Group’s survey of the ACEDS community. The event, held at the auditorium in the AXA Center, drew 350 professionals. This was followed by a fabulous after party sponsored by Complete Discovery Source, affectionately known as CDS Legal

Jared’s presentation was the talk of the evening. His multimedia tools and showmanship aligned with hard numbers from his years of tracking placement data. Centering the cyber landscape in relation to the e-discovery landscape, Jared shared salary trends and geographic changes. For example, in e-discovery companies are investing in a few top sales people and supplementing with high-level consulting rather than larger numbers of journeymen sales people. Jared also provided a roadmap for e-discovery professionals to get into Cyber.

Jared’s bold prediction that in five years, 100% of e-discovery professionals will be hybrid cyber or totally cyber was hotly disputed in conversation after conversation. On the other hand, attendees were in agreement that Jared’s industry timeline from the Wild West through the Depression and into the transition into cyber was the story of their careers.

Mary Mack shared some surprises from the Hanover Research study of the ACEDS community. Of note, half of thecertified community did not change companies in the last 5 years, and yet almost all had increased responsibilities, better titles, multiple job offers and double-digit increases in compensation. Additionally, the quality of CEDS to CEDS communication was rated very high by corporations, law firms and service providers.  CEDS to non-CEDS communication was rated lower by corporate and law firm participants than by service providers. Service providers thought CEDS to non-CEDS communication was very good and similar to CEDS to CEDS. Hiring managers gave faster on-boarding and fewer errors as the top reasons to hire a CEDS.

The final half hour of the program included questions and comments from the NY audience. Watch for links to an upcoming live webinar regarding the ACEDS survey and to the recording of the Monday night State of the Industry event.

Stealth Launch of Cybint
The ACEDS community was invited to participate in our beta of Cybint assessment and training. Roy Zur, the Israeli attorney and cyber expert who rocked our April 2016 conference, is now part of the BARBRI family. ACEDS will customize a program specifically for our community.

Pro bono Scholarship Conversations
The ACEDS announcement of scholarship offerings to clinics, law firm and corporate pro bono programs, law schools, paralegal schools and those working to increase access to justice was very well received. Most current e-discovery professionals are working to capacity, and are happy to contribute to their organization’s pro bono initiatives by offering an opportunity to train up the next generation of e-discovery professionals.

#DrinksWithDougAndMary
ACEDS is grateful to our Platinum Affiliate, CloudNine, who sponsored the ACEDS Ruth’s Chris Happy Hour gathering on Tuesday afternoon. More than 100 of our friends and colleagues raised a glass (or two) at the PowerPoint-free event hosted by Doug Austin of the eDiscovery Daily Blog and CloudNine. New friends, like Jonathan Maas from the UK and Patrick Burke from Seyfarth, mingled with our ACEDS faculty and partners including David Horrigan, Eric Mandel, Robert Childress and Zelda Owens.  Our Chapter leaders were well represented in Suzanne Clark, Joe Bartolo, Park McManus, Colleen Freeman and others. Although not a formal birds-of-a-feather session, there was a continuation of conversation and new introductions to our financial “caucus.”

Snapchat Glasses, Affiliate Bingo and Two CEDS Packages
iConect's marketing department earned the coveted center square with their Bingo Card design and our community played a great game of Bingo, which included visits to our affiliate booths to earn squares. The two lucky winners of the Snapchat glasses were:
1.Emily Fedeles, Baker & Hostetler
2.Susan Langsworth, Ann Arbor Defense

The winners of the CEDS packages were:
1. Cynthia H. Chan of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP (Paul, Weiss)
2. Nalee Thao, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP (Sutherland)

Booth Activity: King of Project Management and LTPI
The officers of LTPI spent some time in our booth as part of our emerging partnership and ACEDS Advisory Board member Mike Quartararo had a line around the corner as he signed his Project Management in eDiscovery book. Joy Murao had a printer in the booth for her scavenger hunt. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and talked with us.  Kudos to Kevin Grisales, James Mosier and Dan Forkrud for staying on their feet the whole time.

Partner Events
Platinum sponsors Ricoh Legal and ZyLAB hosted client dinners and honored Kaylee Walstad and Mary Mack with invitations. University of Florida’s Bill Hamilton invited us to his High Signal to Noise event where Judges Rodriguez

and Peck held court with Mike Quartararo, Craig Ball, Gary Swenson and Maribel Rivera, among others. BIA’s event at Fogo de Chao drew Hughes Hubbard’s Ignatius Grande, Joy Murao and Mark MacDonald.
